Today, the NBA family received horrible news. Bryce Dejean-Jones, a guard for the New Orleans Pelicans, was fatally shot early this morning. According to his agent, it happened as he was attempting to enter his girlfriend’s new apartment, and was mistakenly at the wrong door. He was then shot by that apartment’s occupant as he made his way in. He was only 23 years old.
This season was Dejean-Jones’ first in the NBA, after making it to the Pelicans in February via a couple of ten day contracts. The Pelicans must have liked what they saw, because they signed him to a multi-year contract after his second ten day expired. He played in 14 games, starting 11, and averaged 5.6 points and 3.4 rebounds a game before a wrist injury ended his season.
It’s easy to take NBA players for granted, especially ones right at the start of their career, so this tragedy seems particularly unfair. It’s always sad to see a young, promising life cut short, and we extend our thoughts and best wishes to Bryce Dejean-Jones’ friends, family and teammates.
